As a paranormal investigator you are aware that there are many different types of haunts and chances are you have encountered one or more of each type. Most paranormal activity can be classified into two different types of haunts - residual haunts and intelligent haunts. Let’s take a look at both of these haunts up close.

Intelligent haunts

An intelligent haunt is what people normally think of when ask about the paranormal. These ghosts know what they are doing and interact with the living. Sometimes these haunts do not know they are dead, so they are desperate to communicate with the living. Intelligent haunts keep similar personalities and characteristics as they had when they were living.

Intelligent haunts are also responsible for moving objects, the feeling of being touched or pushed and many of the other typical claims made during paranormalinvestigations. Ghost hunters are able to capture the best evidence when interacting with intelligent haunts. As an investigator you can ask the spirit to talk to you, knock on a wall, push you or move an object.

Residual haunts

A residual haunt is one that occurs over and over. Think of this type of haunt to be similar to a song stuck on repeat. For example, a nurse can be seen rushing to the operating room everyday at the same time. Or a Union Soldier adding a bayonet to his riffle before heading into the battle at Gettysburg. Which reminds me of a famous residual haunt in Gettysburg. This one is of an entire operating room that was located in the basement of a dorm. Witnesses have reported seeing this scene time and time again upon exiting the elevator.

It is believed that these entities are really not ghosts, but imprints on the space timeline. These actions repeat over and over as if those spirits are reliving their former actions. They are not aware of their surroundings that others are around and any actions made by the living does not alter the path of what they are doing.

Residual haunts generally occur in the same location around the same time of day the original events occurred.
